The South African National Council of Mediators (SANCOM):

SANCOM was established as a national body:
  • to promote the use of the process of mediation as a means of resolving disputes in a multidisciplinary framework
  • to support and promote the common interests of mediators in South Africa
  • to promote ethical standards and integrity in the practice of mediation in South Africa
  • to determine standards of accreditation for registration with the Council
  • to provide a national representative forum for the exchange of views and information on matters pertaining to mediation and related matters
  • to liaise with and to present the collective views of its member organisations to related bodies, public authorities and to other interested organizations and persons
  • the facilitation of networking and synergies between its member organizations

Membership of SANCOM is open to all organizations engaged in the field of mediation or related fields and who subscribe to the Council’s objects. Any organization that wishes to become a member of the Council may apply to the Secretary and, in the discretion of the Executive Committee, be enrolled as a member.

Current Executive Committee:

  • John O’Leary (FAMAC) – Chairperson
  • Alfred Wolpe (SAAM) – Vice Chair
  • Sue Folb (FAMAC)
  • Susan Harris (SAAM)
  • Claire Penfold (Family Life Centre)
  • Michelle Posemann (MISA)

National Register of Mediators:

In accordance with one of its primary objectives, SANCOM collates and at all times maintains and makes available a national register of mediators accredited by a member organization. The national register of mediators consists of a general register and specialist registers (for example a specialist register of family mediators) – for a copy of the list contact Michelle Posemann at michelle@mediation.org.za.

Mediators may not register directly with the Council and the conduit for registration is through a member organization, which manages the accreditation of its own members. To this end each member organization shall be obliged to submit its accreditation criteria to the Council for approval before its mediators will be registered.

Currently, the member organizations of SANCOM are:

Code of Conduct:

All mediators registered with the Council shall be obliged to adhere to the Code of Conduct of the organization through which registration with the Council was achieved.

Any written allegations of improper conduct received by the Council shall be referred to the relevant member organization, which shall be obliged to deal with such allegation in accordance with its own Code of Conduct/Disciplinary Procedures.
